Bristol City came to York searching for their first away win of the season and, with their hosts’ minds on a midweek trip to face Queens Park Rangers in the 3rd Round of the League Cup, they stole all three points with the only goal of the game. Nigel Pepper was out of the side, which meant Alan Little put in Graeme Murty and switched Scott Jordan’s position, while expensive signing Rob Matthews was still waiting for his first goal for the club. The visitors scored the winner on 24 minutes, striker Kevin Nugent given all the time in the world by the City defence to take the ball down, control it, and beat Andy Warrington without much trouble. It was not ideal preparation for the upcoming Cup tie, but City fans were still in buoyant mood all ready for the midweek trip to London. York City: Warrington, McMillan, Hall, Jordan (Bushell), Tutill, Barras, Matthews (Baker), Williams, Barnes, Peverell, Murty.
