Alan Little’s City side managed to halt their losing run in Football League Division 2 with a 2-2 draw with old foes Stockport County at Bootham Crescent. The City boss made two changes to the side that had lost at Adams Park in midweek, recalling Darren Williams in place of Graeme Murty and Paul Baker instead of Nicky Peverell. An old boy kicked York in the teeth though when, after only 67 seconds, former City striker Ian Helliwell looped a header past Andy Warrington into the net in front of the David Longhurst Stand. York huffed and puffed but couldn’t get back into the game and Stockport went in at half-time one in front. One was soon two when a terrible miscommunication between Tony Barras and Warrington allowed Michael Oliver to toe poke the ball into the net. The County midfielder couldn’t believe his luck as his opportunist thinking paid off. At this point, York were over-reliant on Paul Barnes to bail them out of trouble and, after despatching a well-taken penalty, it was Barnes who converted Steve Bushell’s cross to draw City level at 2-2. Finally the losing run was quoshed before it became a psychological problem but many fans were fearful that if York were to lose their talisman Paul Barnes through injury or more like a transfer, City would be in big trouble. York City: Warrington, McMillan, Hall, Pepper, Tutill, Barras, Matthews, Bushell, Barnes, Baker, Williams. Attendance: 3,101 Footage from ITV Sport Re-edited and Remastered by Phil Howden
