Straight off the back of City’s first home win of 1998/1999 came their first home League defeat, and that came when they met Essex side Colchester United at Bootham Crescent. Steve Wignall’s Colchester side had won promotion in the previous campaign via the play-offs and were looking to consolidate their position in the third tier, like City had done a few years earlier. They came into the game at Bootham Crescent off the back of three League defeats in a row, so City went into the game as favourites. However, the visitors had the better of the first half and went in a half-time 1-0 up thanks to Neil Gregory’s header from the corner that seemed to bamboozle City keeper Bobby Mimms. But a second half penalty from Neil Thompson, already his fourth goal of the season and second from the spot, drew City level and a draw look a nailed on certainty. But, on 87 minutes, midfielder Steve Forbes guided a header past Mimms into the corner and United had won the game. York City: Mimms, McMillan, Hall (Jordan), Tinkler, Jones, Thompson, Connelly, Pouton, Cresswell, Woods (Tolson), Garratt (Reed).
