A healthy crowd of 3,730 attended City’s next match at Bootham Crescent, a Football League Division 3 fixture against Colchester United. York were now building a decent lead at the top of the table and the York public were now starting to really get behind John Ward’s men. Mid-table Colchester United offered a threat but one that any Minstermen side capable of promotion could easily deal with. After John Ward had been awarded the Manager of the Month award for August, the game kick off but it was United who had the better early chances in an attempt to spoil the party. York soon got into gear and a deft header from John Borthwick set up Paul Barnes but Colchester keeper Paul Newell made a superb point blank save. After 15 minutes, some great pass and move play led to Barnes feeding Ian Blackstone, who had signed a new contract before the game, who stroked the ball past Newell for 1-0. But City needed a superb double save from Dean Kiely to keep themselves in front before half-time. A minute after half-time Colchester’s resistence was finally crushed when Blackstone headed home a Nigel Pepper corner and York had got their seventh win in eight games. York City: Kiely, McMillan, Hall, Pepper, Stancliffe, Warbuton, McCarthy, Borthwick, Barnes, Swann, Blackstone. Attendance: 3,730 Footage from ITV Sport Re-edited and Remastered by Phil Howden
