In this lecture we discuss the giant metallic structure and physical properties of metals. Generally metals are elements found on the left of the periodic table. They tend to lose electrons unlike the non-metals found on the right. Metals consist of a giant metallic structure. Giant metallic structures are held together by strong metallic bonds. These are strong electrostatic attractions between the positive metal ions and the surrounding negative delocalised electrons. The stronger the charge on each metal ion, the stronger this electrostatic attraction. Here we also discuss some of the physical properties of metals like their conductivity. Because metals have in them mobile electrons buzzing around, they can conduct electricity and heat.
