Cutaway Satterfield leaving STORYLINE: Chinese and US envoys held separate meetings with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Palestinian Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat on Wednesday to try and kick start the faltering peace process. Beijing's special envoy to the Middle East, Wang Shijie, met Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at his Ramallah headquarters. The Chinese envoy is on a tour of the region to try to help resolve the conflict in the area. After Wang said that although the situation had worsened it was necessary to keep hoping that a solution could be found. Yasser Arafat condemned Israel's continuing military operations in the West Bank and accused the Israeli government of ignoring UN resolutions. Arafat also rejected Israeli Foreign Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, threat to expel the Palestinian leader if he becomes prime minister in the January 28 elections. Although Netanyahu has repeatedly called for Arafat's expulsion, it took on new meaning after he became a key figure in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government last week. Meanwhile in Jericho, US envoy David Satterfield met Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and other senior Palestinian officials to promote a plan for reviving Mideast peace negotiations and establishing a Palestinian state with provisional borders by next year. The meetings came as the Israeli army carried out overnight raids in Nablus and helicopters fired missiles at a suspected weapons workshop in Gaza City.
