So level 1 NICU is the one where the babies who are very stable, term babies are being catered. So level 1 NICU also cares for babies who are also sicker, but they have recovered from their illness and they are currently stage and they are kind of recuperating. So level 1 NICU is a basic level of NICU. You can also call it is a newborn nursery where stable babies are catered to. Level 2 NICU, is otherwise called as specialised newborn care unit where babies who are above 2 weeks of gestation or above 1.5 kilos can be manage. So usually babies more than 1.5 kilos and less than 2.5 kilos are managed in these level 2 nurseries, They will be having facilities or provide basic oxygen therapy, the intravenous fluids, which the baby requires, phototherapy for jaundice, they will be able to provide and again this newborn nurseries will cater to provide who are otherwise stable and who can be provided step down care from Level 3 NICU. Level 3 NICU. Otherwise called as neonatal intensive care unit or NICU caters to babies who are less than 1,5 kilos. Who are preterm, as well a term babies with sickness. So these babies may require various interventions including ventilation and lot of intervention including insertion of long line, providing intravenous nutrition. So all these things will be provided in NICU. Level 3 NICU should also have the surgical specialities that are available and all the medical subspecialties under paediatrics and neonatology, which should be available in such level 3 facilities. So Level 3 NICU cares for sick newborns, all the extra subspecialty care which should be provided to the babies admitted in Level 3 NICU. Level 4 NICU’s are regional NICU’s where complex surgeries are done for babies with complex congenital conditions like congenital malformations, heart malformations etc. So here in addition to paediatric subspecialties, even paediatric surgical subspecialties are available so that the babies will require a comprehensive medical and surgical care.
