Newborn screening can be done form the cord blood sample, like from when the baby’s umbilical cord is cut, samples can be taken form the blood in the umbilical cord. Usually this cord sampling is done for the thyroid hormone. Otherwise generally nowadays the newborn screening is done when the baby is around 48 hours old, when the baby is fed some milk. That is the time ideally when the newborn screening is done, around 48 hours of age, where the heel prick sample of the baba is done and the blood is collected in the filter paper. Why 48 hours is important because some of abnormal metabolites where the inborn errors of metabolism will start rising when the baby is given some amount of feeding. So if you do the sampling before this, this abnormal metabolites may not be elevated to a level where they can be detected by the screening tests. So that is why the newborn screening has to be done ideally atleast when the baby is 48 hours old and when the baby has received some oral feeding.
