They claimed the air strike also set fire to a building, destroyed several vehicles and damaged homes. Clashes between US-backed Iraqi troops and Shiite militiamen have been ongoing in the area, that is also home to an estimated 2.5 (m) million Shiites. AP Television footage showed smoke still billowing from a damaged building covered with soot. Several wrecked vehicles were also visible, while the injured from the air strike were seen being treated in Sadr hospital. One local women told AP Television she was at a loss to understand why her people were being attacked. ''Why do aircraft and missiles pound us? They destroyed our houses and our properties. They damaged my son's cars. Why?'' Um Hussein said. The footage also showed residents holding a funeral procession for two victims. On Saturday, the radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr issued a "final warning" to the Iraqi government to halt the US-Iraqi crackdown against his followers or he would declare "open war until liberation." A full-blown uprising by al-Sadr, who led two rebellions against US-led forces in 2004, could lead to a dramatic increase in violence in Iraq at a time when the Sunni extremist group al-Qaida in Iraq appears poised for new attacks after suffering severe blows last year.
