The airstrikes were part of a retaliation to Palestinian mortar fire on Thursday that killed one Israeli. An Israeli army spokesman confirmed Friday's airstrikes adding that the first airstrike was targeting a Hamas post. The airstrike reportedly destroyed its target but left fifteen Palestinian civilians injured in the northern Gaza strip area of Beit Lahiya, the spokesman said. According to the spokesman, the second airstrike was aimed at a weapon manufacturing site in Gaza city but did not reach its target. Night shots of the scene from the second airstrike showed damage caused to a building - a metal workshop in Gaza city - that was hit by the strike. The sudden burst of violence dealt a new setback to Egyptian efforts to broker a Gaza truce between Israel and Hamas and raised the prospect of harsher violence. Hamas wants a cease-fire to include an end to Israel's yearlong economic blockade of Gaza. Israel sealed Gaza's borders and imposed other economic sanctions after the Hamas takeover of Gaza last year, tightening the restrictions after a sharp increase in rocket fire several months ago. The sanctions have caused shortages of fuel, electricity and many basic goods in Gaza.
