Also in Baghdad, a car bomb killed nine Iraqi National Guardsmen and wounded 20 people in Baghdad on Wednesday, police said. The attack in the Doura section of the capital came hours after a suicide bomber killed at least 47 people in the Kurdish city of Arbil in the north. The worst attack occurred at 6:45 a.m. (0245 GMT) on Thursday at a gathering point for police patrols in the Al-Amil area of western Baghdad, killing eight policemen, wounding two and destroying two vehicles, said police Major Mousa Abdul Karim. Another suicide car bomb exploded about 15 minutes earlier in the nearby Al-Gazaliya area, killing one policeman, wounding six and destroying four of their cars, said Karim. In Baqouba, 60 kilometres (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded on Wednesday near an Iraqi police patrol, according to authorities. No casualties were reported among the policemen. The bomb was one of four on Wednesday targeting US and Iraqi troops in Baqouba, according to a US military spokesman. Militants have been stepping up bombings and other attacks since a new Iraqi government was formed last week, killing about 200 people.
