After USC's Tuesday practice of mock game week, USCFootball.com beat writer and columnist Dan Weber and reporter Keely Eure have the news and notes from Howard Jones Field. The Trojans had a competitive practice in full pads after taking Sunday off and having a walk-through on Monday. "Today we worked primarily on a little first and second down game plan versus UNLV; as well as continuing competition as several positions," head coach Clay Helton said in his post-practice media scrum. "We'll go through this week; play our mock game on Saturday; sit down and discuss personnel on Sunday and then make some decisions moving forward for our team as we get ready for UNLV." As far as the quarterback competition is concerned, Helton alluded that the decision will be made next week. Helton told reporters that he will sit down with each player and their families to discuss why he chose the starter. When asked about the timing of the decision, USC's head coach didn't seem to be worried about the timing surrounding the decision. "I wanted to continue the process because I wanted the [quarterbacks] to continue to compete," Helton said. "They all need to progress. I want to make sure I'm right, too. So, another week does not hurt ... We're getting plenty enough work with all three, which is good, and I think it makes all three of them better players if called upon during the season." On the injury front, Cam Smith was a full participant in practice for the first time since injuring his hamstring. Austin Jackson, Ykili Ross, Liam Jimmons and Chase Williams returned as well. Porter Gustin (meniscus tear) rehabbed during practice with tackling dummies and moved well.
