Friday Tropical Update: Invest 99 could become depression in Gulf

Invest 99 is entering the Bay of Campeche Friday morning with only a few t-storms surrounding the unorganized tropical wave. It will have the next 48 hours to organize some as it drifts northwest toward northern Mexico and the Brownsville, Texas area. Wind shear isn't terribly high and water temperatures are very warm, so it's possible a tropical depression or tropical storm tries to develop. The system will move inland by Saturday night/early Sunday. It is not a threat to Louisiana. The moisture from this tropical wave will move into Texas and spread across the state next week increasing the chance of rain for the drought-stricken state. Long-range models hint at perhaps more development elsewhere in the Atlantic basin as we continue through next week, which isn't a surprise as we near the peak of hurricane season on September 10. However, nothing definitive at this moment.
