Ceylon "traditional", grandma made Kokis to Future, Kids Enjoyed Traditional Rabana | Back to Ceylon

Sihala and Hindu new year festival is one of the main festivals in Sri Lanka and it is a celebration time with number of traditional customs. During the festive season, nature gets change which gives a freshness as well as new hopes to people’s mind. Before the new year, villagers get their harvest of traditional crop farming and it is the first indicator of the prosperity of the new year. All trees are filled with tasty fruits and beautiful natural flowers. During the season, traditional villagers used to make number of traditional sweets to treat their loved once. Common sweets that they made were Kokis, Kondakawum, Asmi, Kawum and etc. But theses traditional recipes are somewhat less common in future generation. “Back to Ceylon” is presenting the methods of making these traditional sweets in easy and simple way to donate those to next generation. Grandmother who is the expert of making theses traditional food items taught her grand daughter of the way of making “Konda kawum” and Kokis with beautiful natural colours made with deafferents herbs. Red colour from Hibiscus flower, blue colour from butterfly pea flower, green from Moringa leaves and yellow from turmeric powder. Rice flour made out of the golden harvest that they taken form their paddy field was used as the main ingredient for each and every traditional sweet. All sweets were deep fried items in pure natural coconut oil made from their homes with traditional coconut oil milling methods. In the new year table, main dish is milk rice made with raw rice and coconut milk. Kids are the happiest group who enjoyed the new year season during their school vacation. They are eating, playing and practicing traditional customs. Groups of children in every corner of the Sri Lanka are starting enjoying with “Onchillawa” when the new year is around the corner. Also, villagers play with “Rabana” another symbol of Sinhal and Hindu aluth awurudda to get a relief from the workload they did for celebrating new year. Grandmother is trying to teach the way of playing Rabana to her grand children wit her skills and practices.
