In the Basement with Abby, E2: Painting & Skim Coating

In the first step of Abby’s basement home office remodel journey, painters prep one wall for wallpaper by skim coating, then paint the entire room a new color. Abby talks to Tony R., VP of Sales & Operations of Helix Painting from Littleton, Colorado. They discuss the extra COVID-19 precautions that Helix Painting takes, including masks, social distancing, and virtual estimates. Then, Tony walks Abby through the skim coating process, which involves two coats of mud. They use a large knife, skim coat the wall, sand it, skim coat it again, sand it again, then paint it. While they paint, Abby talks to Vanessa H., who co-owns Denver’s Helix Painting along with her husband Brandon. They launched the small, family-owned business in 2017. Vanessa discusses operating a business during COVID-19, including why many people decided to paint their homes during this time.
