Since May, the Russian military and mercenaries have been engaged in a violent conflict in Bakhmut. The Wagner mercenaries, in particular, have reportedly intensified their offensive efforts. However, Ukraine has not given in and is putting up a strong resistance, with at least eight of the country's best brigades disrupting Wagner's plans. According to a spokesperson for the Pentagon, the Wagner Group may have as many as 50,000 fighters in Ukraine, many of whom are former prisoners. Ukrainian President Zelensky has compared the fighting in Bakhmut to the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
