On this Memorial Day we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. This year, our tributes and commemorations have taken on a different look. The coronavirus has cancelled traditional parades and large ceremonies moving many observations online, making it a quiet day of remembrance at a time when so many lives are being lost. The rate of COVID-19 spread is slowing in New Jersey, the state is reporting 16 lives lost since yesterday. The lowest number since the start of this outbreak, but officials warn that data may be off due to a delay in reporting over this holiday weekend. 11,144 lives here have now been lost due to coronavirus-related complications. Statewide another 965 new positive tests were reported overnight. Bringing our total to 155,092 confirmed cases. For the third day in a row, state hospitalizations remained below 3,000. The lowest since early April. 719 patients are in critical care, with 540 needing ventilator help. Those numbers also continue a significant downward trend as 212 more hospitalized residents were discharged either to their homes or other care facilities in the last 24 hours.
