RECEIVE LIFE | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (March 26, 2023) We are on the fifth Sunday of lent. We are moving closer to the Holy Week and Easter. The gospel shows us the growing tension between Jesus and the Pharisees who would find the charge against him. Jesus' friend Lazarus died at Bethany. Now, Bethany is in Judea, where according to the gospel, the people tried to stone Jesus. By going to Bethany, Jesus risked his life. In fact, Thomas was sure that they would die on this trip. Let us also go to die with him, he told his fellow disciples. But instead of death, what they saw was life. Jesus called Lazarus out of his tomb. He came out alive. Friends, the lenten season is an invitation to believe in Jesus's participation in our humanity. We began the season with the recollection of his temptations. Now we saw how the death of his friend affected him. Jesus wept. In the coming days, we will see his anxiety and physical suffering during his arrest, trial and crucifixion.
