Wide of damaged house with government building in background STORYLINE: Two suicide car bombers attacked a police station in a residential area of Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 13 people and wounding 82, police said. The first driver raced through a police checkpoint guarding the station and exploded his vehicle just outside the two-story building. Moments later, a second suicide car bomb drove toward the checkpoint's concrete barriers and exploded just outside it, police said. Iraqi police stations often are the target of attacks by insurgents who accuse the officers of betraying Iraq by working in cooperation with its elected government and US-led coalition forces. The blasts occurred at 10:00 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) in Baiyaa, a mixed Sunni-Shiite area of western Baghdad, a police official said. He said 13 people died, five policemen and eight civilians, and that 82 were wounded: 46 policemen and 36 civilians. But the casualties could rise as rescue workers searched under rubble at the scene. The blasts collapsed nearby buildings, smashing windows and burying at least four cars under piles of concrete. A number of car service centres are located near the police station and at least two mechanics working nearby were wounded by flying shrapnel and debris. Meanwhile, at least two mortar rounds hit the residential area of Bab al-Mu'dham in northern Baghdad on Sunday, wounding six people and causing serious damage to a house, eyewitnesses said. "There were two rockets, one landed in that residential area over there, injuring a whole family in a house over there. Another rocket hit an open area there inuring people too," one man at the scene told reporters. The mortar rounds landed near the National Library and other government facilities.
