(1 Oct 2016) A protest against the bombardment of the Syrian city of Aleppo was held in Istanbul's central Taksim district on Saturday. The protesters stood in silence as they held placards and pictures showing scenes from war-torn Aleppo. The 'Global Day of Rage for Aleppo', as it was called, was organised by a Syrian non-governmental organisation worker in Istanbul. Nearly 300,000 people are trapped in Aleppo's rebel-held eastern districts, a pocket of resistance some eight miles (13 kilometres) long and three miles (five kilometres) wide that civil defence workers say has been hit by 1,900 bombs in the past week. The campaign has wreaked destruction on hospitals, clinics, residential buildings, water stations and electric generators. At least 96 children are among the 320 people killed in Aleppo since a ceasefire collapsed on 19 September, according to UN refugee agency UNICEF, as Syrian and Russian warplanes barrage the city's eastern opposition neighbourhoods, trying to crush more than five years of resistance there.
