Woody Herman Chart with the Swinging Ken Loomer Big Band

Woody Herman Chart with the Swinging Ken Loomer Big Band

One of the best Big Bands of all time is of course Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd.I saw Woody Herman many times in the 70`s and 80`s and I learned so much from this great Big band leader. As a Big Band leader myself now, I learn to pick the best musicians I can to play the type of charts this fits the style of my Big Band. One of the best swinging Woody Herman charts I know of is one arranged by Dave Lalama, who played piano for Woody and also Buddy Rich call"Thing Ain`t What They Use To Be". I use this chart to feature my outstanding jazz soloist and as a band leader, change a few things about this chart to make it more interesting to the listener. The first soloist is the great Pete Carney on tenor sax. Next we have lead trumpet man Tom Parmerter, followed by David DeWitt on trombone. Austin Vickey on soprano sax swings this out before the band comes roaring in on this great arrangement. I have learned from band leaders like Woody Herman,Buddy Rich,Count Basie,Stan Kenton, and Maynard Ferguson to feature your best soloist and to always give 100% to the music. Thanks to these outstanding musicians,I`m able to have a Swinging Big Band alive today!
