I`m so glad I got to see the Woody Herman Big Band so many times in the 70`s. I have learned so much about leading a Big Band from Woody Herman. It`s always about the music first and finding the best musicians to play these great arrangement. This arrangement done by Dave LaLama for Woody Herman of Things Ain`t What They Use To Be is one swinging chart that I use to feature some of my outstanding jazz musicians. Taking the first solo on tenor sax is Pete Carney followed by my great lead trumpet player Tom Parmerter. My good friend Dick Rumore is next on bari sax. Hiram Hazley on bass plays another excellent bass solo with Austin Vickrey swinging next on the soprano sax. I have learned so much from Big Band leaders like Woody Herman,Doc Severinsen,Buddy Rich,Louie Bellson, and Count Basie that it is the musician you hire who will make or break a Big Band. I must thank my musicians who always give 100% to the music to make it feel and swing so good. I get to drive and swing the Big Band with my Slingerland classic drums and love so much playing with these excellent musicians. Doing what I can to make sure this artform of the Big Band keeps going for a long time.
