After roughly two months of a statewide lockdown, New Jersey leaders on Tuesday announced plans to double the amount of coronavirus tests and deploy an army of contact tracers by the end of May. Both elements are considered key components on Gov. Phil Murphy’s roadmap to recovery as he looks to reopen the state. Murphy said his new plan will make it easier and more convenient for all residents to get tested. Overnight data shows the state added 898 new positive tests, putting the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases at 140,743. The statewide total of fatalities is 9,508, with 198 deaths announced. The number of newly hospitalized COVID-19 patients is up over the last 24 hours to 4,328, but overall new hospitalizations are down 70%. Total hospitalizations are down by nearly half since the peak. Patients in the ICU and on ventilators are also down significantly. The daily positivity rate has dropped again to 23% from samples collected May 8, the last date for available data. But the Murphy says the state still has far too many people sick and contracting this virus. Per capita data shows for every 100,000 residents, no other state is currently harder hit than New Jersey. But the administration says more testing will create more data, and more data allows steps forward.
