Radio-Play Comics - Grant Morrison's Invisibles: Volume 1, Part 1 (of 2)

Have you ever heard of The Invisibles? It was Grant Morrisons first real comics masterpiece, published by DC Vertigo from 1994 to 2000, he began and ended a world all his own filled with magic, sex, drugs, rock and roll, rebellion against authority, time travel, cosmic knowledge, aliens, gods and monsters, and shot through with hundreds of real world references to organizations and belief systems from around the world. It's a comic about everything, about the nature of reality itself, and it's by far his weirdest work to date. The Invisibles is perhaps best known for largely inspiring The Matrix, it's been said the book was on the set and much of the imagery and concepts appear in both, though in radically different contexts. The Invisibles are a team of rebels with psychic and magic powers who fight against a world controlling superpower composed of businesses, governments, and a greater order of alien monsters called Archons, who live in the realm beyond our universe known as the Outer Church. They are the enemy of freedom and individuality, which the invisibles fight to protect, and to free the minds of the masses, who remain unaware of the shadow war that's been going on for centuries, if not thousands of years. The eternal struggle between freedom and control. Dane McGowan is the new recruit, he's been prophesied to be the next Buddha level spiritual power, and both sides want him. When he is interred at Harmony House to be reformed, King Mob rescues him in explosive and bloody fashion. But Dane is such a rebel he even rebels against The Invisibles, and most of this book is spent on his training with the homeless Mad Tom O' Bedlam, who just happens to also be the greatest magician of this age, and his first mission, to rescue the spirit of the Marquis De Sade from the clutches of the enemy, that he might design a new sexual revolution. We'll also meet some other invisibles and their enemies along the way and begin to see the true shape of this reality.
