Al Jenabi being led through the door STORYLINE: A Thai court agreed on Tuesday to extradite to Australia an Iraqi man suspected of people smuggling. Ali Hassan Abdolamir Al Jenabi will be extradited to Australia within three months or will be released in keeping with an extradition treaty between the two countries. "The Court has found no reason not to extradite the defendant on grounds that Thailand and Australia have an extradition treaty and this case is a common crime (that is) not politically motivated," an official said. At Australia's request, Thai authorities arrested Al Jenabi on 18 April 2002 at Bangkok International Airport as he allegedly attempted to enter Thailand using a fake passport. He was charged with using a false document and jailed for two months. Canberra alleges that Al Jenabi last year organized several boats to carry hundreds of asylum seekers, mostly Iraqis and Afghans, from Indonesia to Australia. The offences carry a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment or a fine of up to 220,000 Australian dollars (123,000 (US) dollars). Australia has taken a tough stance on illegal immigration that has been much criticised by rights groups, however it argues the policy is fair, claiming many asylum seekers pay huge sums to be smuggled in, effectively jumping ahead of poorer refugees.
