(25 Jul 2016) Thousands of catholic pilgrims visited on Monday the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps in Poland ahead of Pope Francis' visit to the country. Pope Francis starts his five-day visit to Poland on Wednesday and will meet with hundreds of thousands of young people from around the globe for celebrations of the World Youth Day. The main holy mass is expected to be attended by 1.5 million people. One of the highlights of Pope's visit is a pilgrimage to Auschwitz concentration camp, where he will meet Polish people who helped Jews escape from nazi atrocities. Heavy police and security forces will be deployed in the region of Krakow to prepare for Francis visit. Francis will be the third pope to visit Poland, after Polish-born St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
