The Israeli military says it was firing to deter a Palestinian fishing vessel that had strayed off-limits. A Palestinian doctor said a shell fired by the boat hit a house in a beachside refugee camp. He said the two who were wounded were walking in the street. Another shell landed 90 metres (100 yards) away in an empty area near a United Nations aid distribution centre. Three gunboats were operating off Gaza City's coast on Thursday. Gunboats have been firing off Gaza's shore for several days, despite a parallel ceasefire that ended a three-week Israeli offensive into the Strip. Israel's military spokesperson Major Avital Leibovich said a navy vessel fired warning shots at a fishing boat that was sailing into an area where it was not allowed to go, but he said it did not fire towards the beach or a family. Meanwhile, Israeli troops could be seen stationed on the Israeli side of the border area with Gaza. Munitions and equipment were stacked near tanks. The Israeli military said the last troops left the Gaza Strip before dawn on Wednesday, however they have retained a presence on the Israeli side of the border. Elsewhere, trucks carrying food aid were seen parked near the Karni border crossing, waiting to enter the Gaza Strip. The three-week Israeli offensive ravaged Gaza and left 1,284 Palestinians dead, at least half of them civilians, according to Gaza health officials and a Palestinian human rights group. Another 4,336 were wounded, the majority of them civilians, according to figures released by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). Thirteen Israelis were also killed. The death toll in Gaza sparked international outrage, but in Israel the war was widely seen as an appropriate response to rocket fire launched from Gaza into southern Israel.
