News conference STORYLINE Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasser Al-Kidwa assessed the latest violence between Palestinians and Israel Wednesday. Speaking in Ramallah he said the "activities of these (Palestinian) groups have to be brought to an end." The new violence started after a blast on Friday at a Hamas rally in Gaza's Jebaliya refugee camp killed 21 people, including a 7-year-old boy who died of his wounds on Tuesday. Hamas responded with a series of rocket attacks into Israel and said Israeli aircraft had fired missiles into the crowd, which Israel denied. The Palestinian Authority said the blast was caused when Hamas militants mishandled explosives. Both Islamic Jihad's and Hamas have since declared an end to rocket attacks in retaliation. Israeli has carried out a series of air strikes in Gaza since Saturday, the latest a barrage of missiles at targets early on Wednesday, which knocked out power in Gaza City, plunging most of the city into darkness. Israeli troops also fired live artillery shells into the area for the first time. In Tel Aviv, the Israeli Army Chief of Operations, Major General Israel Ziv held a news conference about the escalation in the Gaza Strip and Israeli military operations in the area. Ziv said no other country would accept rocket attacks and therefore Israel will react to such attacks. Additionally, he said Israel is taking precautions in order not to hurt those not involved in militant activity. The news conference came after a night of Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip and the closure of offices belonging to Palestinian organisations in the West Bank.
