Various of funeral procession STORYLINE: Hundreds of people held a mass funeral procession on Tuesday for those killed in bomb and mortar attacks on Sunday in Sadr city, northeastern Baghdad. The Shiite mourners vowed to retaliate and beat their chests as coffins were loaded onto the roofs of vehicles. But the top Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr called for calm and national unity on Monday. Two car bombers and four mortar rounds shattered shops and market stalls at nightfall on Sunday as residents bought groceries for the evening meal. At least 58 people were killed and more than 200 wounded in the Shiite neighbourhood. Sectarian violence has plagued Iraq since the February 22 bombing of a Shiite shrine and the subsequent revenge killings that targeted the Sunni community and damaged and destroyed dozens of its mosques. Sunday's attacks came just after political leaders said the new parliament would convene on Thursday. The session will set in motion a 60-day deadline for the legislature to elect a president, approve a prime minister and sign off on his Cabinet.
