Vibraphonist Marjorie Hyams is another example of a woman who had a brilliant career in music for a short time, but then grew tired of the lifestyle and decided to settle down and raise a family. After all, this was 1940s America, and women didn't generally become jazz musicians, unless they were singers or a 'seductress' (as Hyams herself once said). Later in life, Hyams (then named Ericsson) said she had no regrets about her decisions, and that's good enough for me. She was clearly a strong woman who knew what was best for herself and her family - whether it was musical decisions or career decisions. Hyams started out as a pianist working in nightclubs and at NBC radio. The radio station had a vibraphone and too many pianists, so she started playing it and within a few years was already being recognized alongside Lionel Hampton as one of the masters of the instrument. Not long into her career, she started playing with George Shearing, and became an integral part to what most consider Shearing's best and most groundbreaking musical era. I enjoyed digging into the music of Marjorie Hyams, and I hope you will too - there are many different possible rabbit holes to go into. Mary Lou Williams, Georg Shearing, Billy Bauer, Bill Harris, Neal Hefti, Charlie Ventura - these are just some of the musicians with whom she recorded. As always, thanks for watching.
