New York City is Lenapehoking (Homelands of the Lenape). East River Park is Lenape land. Lenapehoking is translated as ‘Homelands of the Lenape’. Lenapehoking is a term for the lands historically inhabited by the Native American people known as the Lenni-Lenape or simply “Lenape” (named the Delaware people or Delaware Nation by early European invaders). "The Lenape people are the original inhabitants of Delaware, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Southern New York. For over 10,000 years they have been the caretakers of these lands and of The River of Human Beings, more commonly known as the Delaware River. The Lenape were the first tribe to sign a treaty with the United States and the first tribe to have land set aside for them in New Jersey," says the organization the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania/https://www.lenape-nation.org/ The Lenape people are still here. Return stolen lands to Indigenous people. Democrat New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, Democrat Council Member Carlina Rivera, and other politicians started to destroy East River Park on Monday, November 1st, 2021. On Monday, November 1st, 2021, the organization East River Park ACTION held an action in East River Park. Defenders of East River Park said after the action, "Activists thwarted the beginning of destruction of East River Park for several hours today (Monday, November 1st, 2021). After a lengthy standoff, police arrested two protesters, Allie Ryan and Alice O’Malley, who refused to move from the entrance to the tennis courts where work was to begin. Ryan is running for City Council in District 2, which includes East River Park. Her opponent is the incumbent City Council Member Carlina Rivera, who supports the East Side Coastal Resiliency project. Today was the beginning of the construction/destruction of the park for that project. The election is tomorrow (Tuesday, November 2, 2021). The protest started when the defenders of the Park showed up at dawn and sat in front of the courts just north of the Williamsburg Bridge to block construction workers. By mid-morning, there were some 25 protesters chanting and bringing coffee and snacks to the 15 sitting at the entrance. Some 40 NYPD and a few Parks Police officers stood nearby. After noon, a police captain announced via bullhorn that people blocking the entrance to the construction area would be arrested. Most protesters moved away from the entrance, but Allie Ryan and Alice O’Malley remained seated and were arrested. Why Protest? The East Side Coastal Resiliency project will demolish the entire 47-acre park in phases. All of the biodiversity that has built up in the 82-year-old park will be razed, including 1,000 mature trees. Most of the park will be unavailable to our crowded, low and middle income Lower East Side for many years as a massive levee is constructed with a million tons of fill. This $1.45 billion + resource intensive construction was promulgated by the de Blasio administration and approved by the City Council. The same flood control could be accomplished at half the cost and without entirely destroying the park. The park itself is resilient and could be made more so. That is why East River Park Action has been campaigning for almost three years for a revision of the plan. City officials have not listened. Some activists see civil disobedience as the only way to bring attention to this climate-destructive, environmentally unjust, fatally flawed project." https://mailchi.mp/eastriverparkactio... East River Park ACTION says on its website eastriverparkaction.org, "Hurricane Sandy Didn’t Kill East River Park. New York City Will We Need a Green Plan, Not an Environmental Disaster. The city is determined to go ahead with the massively destructive ESCR–East Side Coastal Resiliency project–even though there are alternatives that could preserve much of our park and provide flood control."
