It halts destruction of East River Park as of December 8, 2021, and remains in effect at least until the hearing December 20. We lost 13 trees Dec. 7. Despite the temporary Restraining Order, the Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio has not stopped cutting down trees. On Saturday, December 11, 2021, East River Park ACTION and "a thousand people a thousand trees" held a press conference in the park, near the Houston entrance. On Monday, November 1st, 2021, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio started the destruction os East River Park in Manhattan. The organization East River Park ACTION held a demonstration in the park. Defenders of East River Park said after the action, "Activists thwarted the beginning of destruction of East River Park for several hours today (Monday, November 1st, 2021). After a lengthy standoff, police arrested two protesters, Allie Ryan and Alice O’Malley, who refused to move from the entrance to the tennis courts where work was to begin." Defenders of the park gathered at 6:30 A.M. at the East River Park Amphitheater. From the amphitheater they marched to near the Houston entrance, where workers were building a fence to try to stop the destruction of the park. Many NYPD officers arrived. Most of them from the Strategic Response Group (SRG). At around 11:20 A.M., officers arrested three East River Park defenders.
