Sambisari Temple is one of the immovable cultural heritages Indonesia possesses. The temple is a historical relic of King Rakai Garung that ruled the ancient Mataram Kingdom from the Sanjaya dynasty. Based on the information in Wanua Tengah III’s inscription, the king ruled Medang at the beginning of the 9th century. This temple is called Sambisari temple which is the one of the Hindu temple in Yogyakarta. This unique temple is really special because it is located under the ground. The sand and the volcanic stone of Merapi mount eruption has piled up that temple area. As a consequence, Sambisari temple was hidden inside the ashes and the stones from the explosive eruption piled up. So that the location of the temple becomes lower than upper ground area surrounding.
