SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Roberts, Director: What I've been trying to do in terms of bringing the skills I have as a documentary filmmaker to making a feature film is to discover moments that occur during the filming, either something an actor gives you or something a camera gives you or something a landscape gives you or something just being in this location, watching the story unfold gives you, so not simply to follow the script although we are following the script but as to pick and invent and respond to what we discover when we're here in this location." 14. Cameraman 15. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Dounaev, Producer: We managed to get a fantastic cast. As you can see there's John Malkovich over there standing behind me and we also have Thomas Kretschmann who has just finished King Kong and Downfall, there's a funny guy who's the lead opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the last Scorcese film, we hope that this story will appeal to a very broad audience and we know that the cast that originally received the script loved it and they're all here in the middle of a very cold winter in St Petersburg." 15. Set in 1946, 'In Transit' is based on real events that took place in the Pushkin suburb when a group of German prisoners-of-war are, by accident, sent a female transit camp with women guards. The film is being shot on location at the "Krasny Treugolnik" (Red Triangle) glue factory in the south of the city, in freezing conditions. Cast member German actor Daniel Bruehl ('Goodby Lenin') says the crew is in a constant battle with the legendary Russian winter but the severe cold helps give the film-making authenticity. He said: "We're trying all sorts of tricks, putting newspaper over the feet, that's what I heard from Russians, they even told me if you put vodka on the feet it helps. I haven't tried it. So we have several different kinds of boots and still it's cold but this is good for the film, because you really can feel that we are cold and we're not just pretending." The film is based on a true story and dedicated to the survivors of the siege of Leningrad. German soldiers are sent in 1946 by mistake to a transit camp in Russia intended for women prisoners on their way to the Gulag. The camp has all Russian women guards and during the one year that the prisoners spend in the camp the Russian women and German men learn to forgive and even to fall in love.
