Travis Orbin - Second Cartoon Theory Session - "Hypnotic Nova's Dance"
/ 107127435995832 http://cartoontheory.bandcamp.com/ / cartoon-theory Max from Cartoon Theory contacted me some time ago to play on another two tunes, this time his project having transmogrified into a full-on collaboration between both him and Breeze. As with the previous session, Max shot me demos with programmed drums and I 'did my thang' on top. This track also features Plini ( / plini ) from the band Halcyon playing a guest guitar solo at 1:44 - 2:30. I recorded two tunes and a third for an unrelated project early this month at my buddy Anup Sastry's studio. Avid viewers of my videos/those who closely follow my career may already recognize the place and be familiar with Anup's own killer playing. Anup and I achieved some really great tones in a matter of a couple of hours; these are all 100% natural drum sounds. My original plan was to round up six tunes from three different artists and knock it all out at his studio. Unfortunately, it panned out to be a less successful venture than expected but that's life, haha. My 'waiting list' for upcoming sessions is steadily growing and rather than provide an undefined timeline, I sought to maximize my output by bringing some work over there; it's always easier when someone else is running the show, punching you in, mixing, etc. I intend to bring more projects to Anup's wonderful studio in the future! As for gear, in this tune I utilized my Pearl Reference Pure tom-toms, Vision bass drum and my usual set of TRX Cymbals (there's an equipment list on my website under 'misc'); the only discrepancy is the 13"/12" hat setup, as opposed to my usual 14"/13" - I thought the smaller hats sounded more hip. The drumheads are clear Emperors, Controlled Sound, and a coated Powerstroke 3 on the bass drum. Notes: 0:37 - 0:43 - I made a mistake here! I intended to initiate a brief theme of a china hit occurring on the 'and' of each '1', but mistakenly -- and without realizing it at the time -- played my 12" hats on the second repetition instead. The somewhat abrasive nature of the hats doesn't sound too out of place, however. 1:03 - 1:06 - 3-16 metric modulation, with the snare purporting a faster feel. 1:07 - 1:11 - 3-16 metric modulation, with the snare purporting a slower feel. 2:59 - 3:11 - The tom-toms and cymbal choices complement the guitar lead, then the 'stack' accents some bits. The double-time feel closes the section with a higher dynamic, while also giving a nod to the guitar. 3:55 - 3:59, outro - There was an effect present on the programmed drums here, so I had Anup choose his own to replicate the sound. 4:08 - 4:09 - Very brief cymbal orchestration that complements the melody.
