Epic Tornado - Palmer to Gilmore City, Iowa 04/12/2022

Destructive EF2 tornado impacts farms from Palmer to Gilmore City, Iowa on April 12th, 2022. A vigorous trough sweeping through the plains had chasers like myself impatiently waiting for this day. A multi-day tornado outbreak had been forecast a week out, but it wasn’t until a couple days beforehand that the models caught up to my suspicion that Western Iowa would be the focus of a tornado threat. Discrete, fast moving storms riding a warm front north/northeast at 50+ MPH was on the table. The short-term HRRR model was consistently showing a discrete thunderstorm forming near Fort Dodge, IA, but I positioned further west near Lytton. Ahead of schedule, cumulus fields thickened and gave rise to a towering cumulonimbus that darted north with me in its bullseye. About to be overrun, I scuttled NE to be in position for what was certain to become a tornado producing supercell. NWS Survey https://bit.ly/3KDJa58 My tornado playlist    • Tornadoes
