Long recovery ahead from Kentucky tornado damage

(16 Dec 2021) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4357776 It may take months, or even years, but residents of the small Kentucky city ravaged by weekend tornados say they will rebuild. Cleanup crews can still be seen all over Mayfield, Kentucky almost a week after a series of devastating tornadoes hit the city of about 10 thousand people. More than 30 tornadoes tore through Kentucky and seven other states over the weekend, killing at least 88 people. Thousands of residents have lost their homes or many of still without power. It's considered to be the worst tornado destruction in Kentucky history. But help has come from both next door neighbors and strangers from far away. Brent Wright lost most of his carpet cleaning business in the storms. He said he didn't even know where to begin to clear debris from his property when a friend in the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell about two hours away showed up with twenty other soldiers to help out. Another group helping with the cleanup is God's Pit Crew. The faith-based crisis response team based in Illinois responds to disasters across the country. They've spent the last few days in Mayfield using chain saws to remove fallen trees from homes. The group's response coordinator says it's the worst disaster he's seen during the 14 years he's worked with the group.
