Ela ni dayaradu - Athana - Tyagaraja - M Balamuralikrishna teaches to D V Mohana Krishna - Album 2

Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK) is a well known and an accomplished Vaggéyakāra; a poet, weaver of fine fabric of music with syllables and notes for its threads; a supremely talented tunesmith; a musician par excellence with an unquenchable quest for innovation; a singer who constantly unearthed unheard compositions and rāgas; and a performer who facilitated his listeners to advance in their music listening experience by enhancing their knowledge. But, what perhaps is unknown is the facet of his being a great music teacher too. This audio (perhaps a unique one) offering lets the listeners discover the preceptor in BMK (an aspect only his disciples knew). We are very grateful to Sri. D V Mohana Krishna (DVM) for sharing this recording from his private collection, in the spirit of music for posterity. These recordings of the interactive sessions done by a student had for their primary objective the teachings and not audio quality. A diligent effort has been made to restore these and we present you “Éla nī dayarādu (Athāña) a celebrated composition of Saint Tyagaraja.” as the second album in this series. What amazed me about this priceless recording is the extent to which a musician could empathise and mirror the composer’s intent even in a teaching session like this! A keen listener would observe the finesse of emotion threaded through the composition and get connected with Saint Tyāgarāja’s intended bhāvam. We believe this would facilitate and inspire music lovers and students alike, to pursue excellence; and also serve as a testimony for the dimensions of Muraligānam that were less known. We look forward to hearing your reflections on this offering that will inspire us to continue the restoration activities of music for posterity.
