Spring maize crop often faces serious competition from weeds, especially Deela (purple nutsedge) and other grasses or broad-leaf weeds. These weeds consume nutrients, water, and sunlight that are meant for maize plants. If weeds are not controlled in the early growth stages, they can reduce maize yield by 25–40%. Therefore, proper weed management during the first 30–40 days after sowing is very important for achieving good production. The first and most effective method to control weeds is timely field preparation and clean cultivation. Before sowing maize, farmers should perform deep ploughing and remove weed roots from the soil. Using a stale seedbed technique can also help, where irrigation is applied before sowing to allow weeds to germinate and then destroyed with light cultivation. This reduces the initial weed pressure in the field. Mechanical control is another useful method. Farmers should carry out one or two hoeings (gudai) within the first month of crop growth. The first hoeing should be done about 15–20 days after germination, and the second around 30 days after germination. This not only removes weeds like Deela but also improves soil aeration and root development of maize plants. Chemical weed control can also be very effective in spring maize. Pre-emergence herbicides such as Atrazine applied within 2–3 days after sowing can control many broadleaf and grassy weeds. For fields with heavy Deela infestation, post-emergence herbicides like Halosulfuron-methyl can be used carefully according to recommended doses. Always ensure proper moisture in soil and follow label instructions to avoid crop damage. An integrated approach works best for controlling Deela and other weeds in spring maize. Combining good land preparation, timely hoeing, and proper herbicide use ensures the field remains weed-free during the critical growth period. By controlling weeds early, farmers can protect crop nutrients and moisture, leading to healthier plants and higher maize yield at harvest.
