Roadside bombing kills two presidential palace staff

(15 Jul 2014) A roadside bombing in eastern Kabul on Tuesday killed two employees of the Afghanistan presidential palace, according to Afghan officials. Gul Agha Hashimi, the chief of criminal investigations with the Kabul police, said the explosion hit a minivan carrying eight staff from the palace's media office. The blast killed two passengers and wounded five others, including the driver. Kabul police spokesman Ashmat Stanikzai said the bomb was detonated remotely after being planted along the midsection of a main road. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Roadside bombings are a major threat to both Afghan security forces and civilians across the country. Such attacks have escalated as the Taliban intensify their campaign ahead of the US-led foreign forces' withdrawal by the end of 2014.
