Covid passports: Tory rebels deal hammer blow to Boris Johnson's authority

MPs voted in favour of Covid passes to enter nightclubs and other large venues Tuesday, in addition to other tough restrictions as part of Boris Johnson's Plan B. Measures include requirements to wear face coverings in most public indoor settings, as well as the removal of 11 countries from the UK travel red list. Boris Johnson has suffered the biggest rebellion of his premiership against plans to introduce vaccine passes, with 99 Conservatives voting against the measure. MPs also voted to approve regulations to require NHS and social care staff to be vaccinated by April 2022 and to extend the face mask mandate. The new measures passed the Commons thanks to the support of Labour, but the PM's attempts to quell a rebellion on his own backbenches failed as a large number of his MPs defied the whip to vote against him on the issue of the passes.
