He played with lions as with kids, and with bears as with lambs. Did he not slay a giant in his youth and remove the shame of the people, when he raised his hand and with a slingstone shattered the pride of Goliath? For he called upon the Lord Most High, who gave strength to his right hand to slay a man mighty in battle, to exalt the strength of his people. Thus he was praised ten thousand times and extolled for the Lord's blessings, bearing him as a gift a crown of glory. For he destroyed his enemies all around, destroyed the hostile Philistines, and broke their power to this day. With every deed he gave glory to the Holy One and Most High. With words of praise he sang hymns with his whole heart, and he loved Him who created him. He placed psalmists before the altar, and the sound of their songs was sweet; he gave splendor to the feasts and perfected the splendor of the festivities, that the holy name of the Lord might be praised, and that the sanctuary might resound with the sound of the dawn. The Lord forgave his sins, exalted his strength forever, made a royal covenant with him, and gave him a throne of glory in Israel. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia GOSPEL Mk 6:14-29 The Death of John the Baptist King Herod heard about Jesus, because His name had become famous, and he said, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him." Others said, "This is Elijah." Still others said, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old. When Herod heard this, he said, "This is John, whom I beheaded; he has risen." For Herod had arrested John and was keeping him bound in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married. For John had warned Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." Herodias was furious with him and wanted to kill him, but she could not. For Herod was afraid of John, seeing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he defended him. Whenever he heard him, he was greatly troubled, yet he listened willingly. Now the opportune moment came, when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles, military commanders, and officials in Galilee. When this Herodias' daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you." He even swore to her, "I will give you whatever you ask, even half my kingdom." She went out and asked her mother, "What shall I ask for?" She replied, "The head of John the Baptist." She immediately went in haste to the king and asked, "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter at once." The king was very sad, but because of his oaths and the guests, he would not refuse her. Immediately the king sent an executioner and ordered John's head to be brought. He went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head on a platter, gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. John's disciples, when they heard of it, came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. Sirach 47:2-11; Mark 6:14-29
