B. v. vittata grows in clumps and is not too dense and the rhizome has sympodial branches. Shoots are yellow or green, covered with brown or black hairs. The reed is erect to 10-20 m high, straight or slightly curved and curved at the tip. Begins to branch after 1.5 m above the ground, has 2 to 5 branches at a node but only one large. Internodes about 20-45 cm long and about 4-10 cm in diameter, reed wall thickness about 7-15 mm, yellow with green stripes, hairs attached and has a white waxy coating when young. The reed fronds fall off quickly, are broadly triangular in shape, 15-45x20 cm wide, longer parts and green in color but eventually turn yellow. The outer side is covered by black miang and hairy edges. Reed midrib leaves erect, broadly triangular in shape, 4-5x5-6 cm in size, narrow at base and tapering at tip, hairy on both sides and along lower edge. The midrib ears are relatively large, oval and beveled to the outside, 0.5-2 cm long with pale brown hairs, ligules slightly serrated with a height of 3 mm. The leaves on the twigs are lanceolate and about 6-30x1-4 cm. The midrib ears are small and rounded, 0.5-1.5 mm high with a few kejur hairs 1-3 mm long. Ligules are nearly flat, about 0.5-1.5 mm high and locos. The inflorescences are panicles and usually on leafless twigs or reeds or on small-leaved reeds with small clusters of spikelets on each node and 2-6 cm apart. Spikelet narrow ovoid shape, 12-19x4-5 mm in size, flattened on the sides, consisting of 5-10 perfect florets and one end floret. This species grows on river banks, on roadsides, abandoned areas, open places and in urban areas as an ornamental plant. This species likes hot and humid lowland areas, sandy soil, temperature 8.8-36C, minimum rainfall of 1020 mm/year, grows to an elevation of 1200 meters, but tends to become stunted above 1000 meters. Golden bamboo can also grow in places where the season is very dry even though it often sheds. This bamboo is used for various purposes including masts, rudders, supports, house masts, although the reeds are not very straight and are not resistant to beetle attack. This water stored in bamboo tubes is used as medicine for various ailments including hepatitis. The leaves are used as part of the treatment of measles, sexually transmitted diseases and abortion drugs. Reeds are used to make combs and koteka in Papua. Reed is well known in the furniture industry and is a good pulp for making paper. The shoots are eaten as a vegetable.
