Israeli troops clash with rock throwing Palestinians at Gaza border fence

(29 Jun 2018) Thousands of Palestinians converged along Gaza's border fence with Israel on Friday, burning tyres and throwing rocks at Israeli troops who fired tear gas and live bullets in yet another protest against Gaza's blockade. The Health Ministry in Gaza said that a 13-year-old Palestinian was shot dead in the head as he participated in a protest in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip. It added that 310 Palestinians were injured, of them 133 were transferred to hospitals, with at least one critical injury, and more than 90 received first aid at field clinics. Israel's military had no immediate comment. The Islamic militant group Hamas that rules Gaza has led three months of protests that turned violent. Over 125 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since they began. Israel says it is defending its border and nearby communities and accuses Hamas of using the protests as cover for attempts to breach the fence and carry out attacks. The rallies are aimed in part at drawing attention to the Israeli-Egyptian blockade imposed after Hamas seized Gaza in 2007.
