Widespread Texas Storms Through Friday: Heavy Rain & Localized Flooding Risk

Widespread rain and storms are expected across much of Texas over the next 48 hours, with localized flooding possible where heavier storms repeat over the same areas. In today’s Texas Weather Roundup, we’re shifting away from the higher-end tornado, hail, and wind threat we’ve dealt with over the past several days. Some storms may still produce hail, frequent lightning, and gusty winds, but the bigger concern through Friday is heavy rain, saturated ground, rising creeks and streams, street flooding, and localized flash flooding. Flooding concerns will be highest tonight into Friday across parts of the Edwards Plateau, Hill Country, Central Texas, South Central Texas, Concho Valley, Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, East Texas, the Golden Triangle, and the Piney Woods. Rainfall totals of 1 to 4 inches are possible on a regional basis across a large part of Texas, with locally higher totals where multiple rounds of storms move over the same locations. Some spots may receive less, while a few could pick up 5 to 6 inches if heavier bands repeat. The good news: much of Texas should get beneficial rain, and the weekend looks much nicer once the system moves out Saturday morning. Cooler temperatures will also settle in behind the front, with a light freeze possible in parts of the northwestern Panhandle.
