S. Korea tops daily cases over 2,000 mark for first time on Wed.

국내 확진자 2천명 돌파... 4단계 지역 요양병원 방문면회 금지 First the first time, South Korea has reported more than two thousand cases of COVID-19 in a single day. As case numbers keep rising, the authorities are imposing stricter rules on nursing hospitals... and certain other facilities where there have been so-called breakthrough infections. They're also urging people not to travel, especially for this upcoming three-day weekend. Choi Won-jong reports. The daily COVID-19 cases in South Korea topped the 2-thousand mark for the first time on Wednesday. Due to the high number of cases, Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Wednesday... that the city might face hospital bed shortages. Only 4-hundred-84 of Seoul's almost 2,000 hospital beds are still available. "The number of Covid-19 patients in nursing hospitals and centers has dropped significantly compared to the third wave due to vaccination's effect. However, recently there have been breakthrough cases from such facilities, so we plan to toughen the measures." Since the beginning of July, the areas under level three or below allowed those who had been vaccinated to visit nursing homes and hospitals. But starting today, any visits must be strictly non-contact. Regular PCR tests will also be conducted at the facilities under level FOUR once every week, and once every two weeks for areas under level three. The health authorities are also urging the public to stay at home during the three-day holiday on National Liberation Day this weekend... to prevent further spread of infections across the country. Meanwhile, President Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday... that the daily cases exceeding 2-thousand mark is concerning. Moon asked for the public's cooperation again... stressing that the government is trying its best to slow the spread of the virus.
