UI Stead Family Children's Hospital Kid Captain 2018: Garret Schuster
As a baby, Garret bruised so easily that his local doctors became concerned. Pediatric hematologists at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital diagnosed him with von Willebrand disease, a genetic bleeding disorder in which a key clotting protein is defective or missing. His nosebleeds can last up to 12 hours, and injuries can cause internal damage. Even though his condition limits him from many physical activities, Garret has found an outlet in competitive dance.
