Former Metro Officer Plans to Sue Police Chief if He Doesn't Get Job Back

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A 23-year veteran of the Metro Police Department says he might to file suit against the chief of police. Carey Adkerson says he wants his badge back and if Chief Steve Anderson refuses to give it to him, he's taking him to court. The Civil Service Commission says Adkerson should get his position back as a police officer but he believes the chief won't let it happen. "It's is very unfair," said Adkerson. Adkerson can relate to those sitting on the green mile. He sat there last year for two months before the chief fired him, "I think it shows the younger officers don't buck the system. Take what I give you or this will happen to you'." While dozens of metro officers say the chief's policy to keep officers accused of wrong doing sitting doing nothing for months on display is wrong, Adkerson has another beef with the chief, "To me it's a violation of what should be due rights but apparently as officers we have no due rights." Just this week, the Civil Service Commission ruled Adkerson deserves to have his job back as a police officer but FOP President Danny Hale told him the chief says Adkerson will never have his badge or gun back again. As chief, Anderson can keep an officer decommissioned even after he's won his job back through Civil Service. Adkerson says he's done it before, "There was an officer that got his job back by Civil Service last July and the chief refuses to put them back to work even though the Civil Service told him to put him back to work." The Civil Service can get a cop his job back but only the chief can give him back his gun and badge. Officers say it's the same when it comes to the green mile. The chief decides which officers under investigations sit and do nothing on display in his lobby and who gets to work behind a desk. The chief decides how long these officers wait to find out if they'll ever be cops again, "A federal judge is going to have to hold him accountable." Adkerson says another officer is already planning a suit against the chief and he'll be adding his name to it if the chief doesn't abide with the Civil Service decision to give him his job back as an officer. _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: WZTV on Facebook:   / foxnashville   WZTV on Twitter:   / foxnashville   Subscribe to WZTV on YouTube:    / @fox17nashville   Daily News Playlist:    • Playlist   For more information, visit https://fox17.com/ Have a news tip?
