CJI Gavai recommends Justice Surya Kant for the next Chief Justice of India | Supreme Court

India is now going to get a new Chief Justice, Justice Surya Kant. Chief Justice B.R. Gavai is retiring on November 23rd and has proposed Justice Suryakant as his successor. Upon government approval, Suryakant will become the 53rd Chief Justice of India. His tenure will be approximately 14 months, extending until February 9, 2027. Traditionally, the most senior Supreme Court judge is appointed Chief Justice.
