Justice Surya Kant, a native of Hissar, Haryana, was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) at a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, November 24, 2025. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of allegiance to the Constitution. The ceremony was significant because the Chief Justices of seven countries attended, a first for an Indian CJI. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, members of the Union Cabinet, and Supreme Court judges.
